A relaxing Weekend

I am a little behind on this post but better late than never...

Our weekend was a nice break. We met and played with some new friends and enjoyed some great weather! Ava's new little friend is so much like her, I think they are going to get along great. The girls played in the pool and at the playground while us "big" kids chatted and got to know each other. Looking forward to seeing our new friends again soon.

Sunday was still beautiful out so we ran back over to Chena Lake and let Ava play in the water. Afterwards we ran into town and finally caved and bought a Sam's club membership. Lucky for us they were having a deal for military so we really only spent $25 instead of $40 for the membership. They actually had a couple things we have been looking for a while now, like a foam mattress pad (I swear I slept sooo much better last night!) and those vacuum bags for storage (really need to get all the clothes Ava has grown out of packed up and stored... for the next baby!).

Before heading home we grabbed some papa Murphy's and called it a great weekend!

Here are few pics we were able to snap before our camera died.
*note to self: Charge Camera!

Hope you all had a great weekend too!

My little Garden

I do not have a green thumb but I still wanted a garden. This year Matt built me a planter box so I could have one! I tried to start my plants from seed, they were doing great until they met my 6 month old son. After Jason killed half of my little babies I killed the rest because I didn't transplant them when they were ready. I was sad but I knew they had plants at the Farmers Market so that is where we headed!

I started my garden with 1 tomato plant, 1 zucchini plant, 1 Brussels sprout, 1 jalapeno plant, 6 kale plants, 6 basil plants (2 lemon, 2 regular & 2 purple), 6 lettuce plants (ice burg and red leaf), 1 cauliflower plant and 1 cucumber. We later added potatoes and 1 cayenne pepper plant.

Here is a shot of when they were all planted
6/21

One week later (6 days)!

As of today 7/22

My little jungle!!!

So far we have harvested:
Basil
(for BLT sandwiches, we added the basil to the mayo)
Kale
(for Juicing)
Today our first Zucchini
(we plan on making bread & chips)

Broccoli

 Cauliflower

 Basil

 Parsley

 Potatoes

Some of our plants aren't doing so well *sad face* like our peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. We have tomatoes but they are refusing (as of now) to turn red. Our cucumbers are not receiving much sunlight due to the large Kale growing above them. The peppers... I am not sure what their problem is but I am guessing maybe it is not quite warm enough or they don't have enough room (one is potted the other is in the planter box). We started getting jalapenos but they stopped growing and started to turn black.

Over all I am pretty happy with our little garden! It has been a good learning experience and is fun for Ava to be able to watch our food grow. We still have about a month left of our season (I think), hoping to harvest a lot more veggies!

Any tips/advice is welcome!

P.s. I forgot to mention that we have traded Kale with 2 neighbors and in return received homemade blueberry muffins and homemade blueberry syrup! Yum!

Sunday on the Lake

Yesterday we were having some nice weather so we decided to run over to Chena Lake and rent a row boat! The first summer we were here we took Ava to the lake and rented a paddle boat, it didn't go so well. She hated her life jacket and I think was a little scared. Fast forward two years and she was definitely ready a boating adventure! Ava and Jason both LOVE the water so they had a great time (as did Matt and I).

Matt and Jason before we pushed off

A quick shot with mom

Ava helping dad row!

We stopped over on the other side of the Lake and had our picnic lunch while Ava and daddy explored and played in the water. Ava's favorite thing to do right now is throw rocks into the water, she got to do that and this time actually wade in... I think she was in heaven!

Isn't he handsome!?

Ava was all smiles

Ava wanted to swim a little, she didn't care that the water is FREEZING!

We thought she was going to fall in, she kept reaching over to touch the water and got close to getting soaking wet a few times.

He is so sweet! He was smiling as I kissed him.

They both grabbed my hand and starting holding it on their own. I was so happy, Matt had to stop rowing to get this shot for me. I LOVE my kids!!!

While we were out on the boat I couldn't help but think, we are really our own little family now. We are doing things with Jason and Ava that our (Matt and I) parents used to do with us. It felt like we are all grown up for a second. I didn't say this out loud but when we got in the car Matt said the same thing to me. I thought it was funny we were both thinking the same thing. Its kind of sad, life goes by so fast (I know, I am only 23!) Or as Matt put it he is half way to 50! I told him that is why we need to make the most of everyday, you never know what is going to happen tomorrow.
Well I think we made the most of our day yesterday.

A new adventure

... In Cloth Diapering!

That's right you heard me. It's out with the old, in this case disposable diapers and in with the new, Cloth Diapers (or actually very very old considering this is how babies have been diapered since the beginning of time!). I have wanted to use cloth diapers since before Ava was born but I thought they were too expensive... Now I know that is hilarious considering since little man has arrived we have been spending around $50 a month on diapers for two kids, you do the math on that one. I paid $104.00 for 20 cloth diapers, I know that sounds like a lot of money BUT cloth diapers last forever. If I take care of them I should be able to use them until Jason no longer needs them and have them for the next baby *wink wink*. I plan on eventually buying some more when I have a better idea of how many we are going to need.  So far 20 has been just fine especially considering Ava is only in the diapers for nap and bedtime.

Here they are!

Aren't they cute!?

I think these two might be my favorites.

Of course this is one that Ava asks to wear! She loves her cars.

Pre-washing the diapers
I was told and I have read that all I need to wash our diapers is washing soda and occasionally vinegar. You can NOT use normal detergent for cloth diapers, I believe the soap will cause the diapers to become less absorbent... that, you do NOT want!

Ava before nap time with you her "special underwear".

So now that I have had the our new diapers for about a week I have gotten to know them a little better. I do a load at least once a day. The instructions for washing the diapers still overwhelms me a little. I am not sure if I am doing this part right. It sounds like I should be washing the diapers about 3 times on different cycles and different temps. I have been told that I will find what works for me but I would love to hear how those of you that use cloth diapers take care of them.

What detergents do you use? How many times do you wash your diapers? What temps do you wash them at? Do you put them in the dryer? ...etc.

We have had some leakage issues, mainly at night. My friend Heather told me that they use disposable diapers at night to avoid leaks and cloth during the day, she also will use two inserts instead of one like I have been doing. Any tips/advice on how to avoid leaks? Do you think it could be the brand (alva) I have or maybe I am putting them on wrong?

I was surprised to learn how many of friends are using cloth diapers on their kids! I know it is a great option, you keep disposable diapers out of the landfills, it's cheaper, better for your kids (less chemicals) and fun!
Let me know why YOU like cloth diapering!

Jason Turns 9 Months old!

Little man turns 9 months old today! I can't believe how fast the time has gone. He has grown and changed so much it's crazy. I ask him almost daily to just stop growing and stay my little squishy, cuddly baby forever. Despite my begging and pleading he just keeps on a growing anyway.

I snapped some pictures to mark this day and as we look through them I will share with you all the new exciting things Jason is up to!

The newest thing as of this month as you all know from an earlier post, Jason started cutting his first tooth!
We are still breastfeeding and plan on continuing until he is at least 12 months old.
He started eating solids a while ago. We tried to start with some baby food. I made him some blended pears and another time some mushed bananas, he was not interested in either! He only wanted whatever we where eating at the table. So now he gets little bits of whatever we are eating. Some foods he has tried and loved are:
Bananas
Watermelon
Graham Crackers
Cheerios
Blueberries
Oatmeal
Grapes
and some Organic baby food blends

He can pull himself up into a standing position and sit on his own. He falls down a lot and smacks his head BUT he is starting to learn how to fall so it doesn't hurt so much.

We are going to start cloth diapering. We never cloth diapered with Ava so this is new for all of us. Just waiting for our new diapers to come in the mail!

He loves to explore and especially loves to play with our laptops! I think he is going to need a laptop of his own pretty soon.

A fun thing I have noticed is that anytime music comes on Jason starts bouncing and slapping to the beat. We might have a little future musician on our hands.

Jason has pretty much moved into his own room for at least half the night anyway. He is in explore mode all the time now so if he is not in his crib to go to bed he is up playing on us pulling my hair and playing with the blanket covering our midnight Alaskan sun (letting in all the sunlight making it hard to sleep).

He loves to play with the doors in our house, opening and closing them. He LOVES bath time, as soon as you turn the water on he books it over to the tub and tries to climb in. It is worse if you are holding him, he will try to jump out of your arms into the tub! He loves peek a boo and playing with his sister. He has started SCREAMING when Ava takes anything he is interested away or when he gets something in his mouth he shouldn't have and I dig it out. He definitely has a way of letting you know what he wants or doesn't want.

I have started signing with him and he thinks it's hilarious, I think he knows what we are saying and has even tried signing "more" back to us.

I think that is it for now! Happy 9 Months to my adorable, handsome, sweet, amazing little boy!!! Can you believe in just 3 short months he will be 1 year old!? Crazy!

Our Sunday Project

Sundays are our cleaning/project days. Today was kind of a big project. I am so excited to show you guys! I had planned for us to clean and go through clothes the kids have outgrown but I knew putting up my tree was going to be a long process especially with two little ones running around. So now that we are done putting it all up we'll see if there is still anytime for chores.

I purchased a vinyl wall decal from http://www.facebook.com/GoodGollyGraphicsFanPage on Facebook. I received my purchase very quickly but realized my tree wasn't as big as I had envisioned. So I messaged GoodGollyGraphics again and asked her to make me an extension and she did. I received my extension quickly but was a little intimidated by this very large wall decal I had just bought and put off the task of putting it up for a little while. Well today I knew we had enough time to get it up and that is just what Matt and I did (with a little help from Jason and Ava)! Here we go!

Here is my wall before we started. I love the color green we have, our house came with just one painted wall.

We taped all the pieces up so we could get everything right where I wanted it.

The first two pieces we got up.

Matt using my debit card to smooth the vinyl onto the wall.

Bubby turns 9 months today!

Matt peeling back the paper.

The kids wanted to check out what we where doing.

My turn to peel off some paper.

The tree is up! Now it's time to move onto the leaves and cute little animals.

The finished product! well almost, now I need to get some pictures to hang up in my tree and then it will really be complete. Can you see all the little animals? Lindsey, there is an owl up over my window!

I really thought this was going to be a completed project but once we got started it was pretty easy, definitely a two person job for the big pieces but not hard. I have another vinyl wall decal for Ava's room to put up (I bought it ages ago) that will be my next little project. I can't wait to show you guys!

What do you think of my tree!?
The woman I bought my tree from is a military wife and a stay at home mom. I believe she is based out of Colorado right now. Her wall decals are affordable and like my tree, if you have something in mind she can work with you to come up and make what you'd like to have on your wall. You can check her out on facebook here http://www.facebook.com/GoodGollyGraphicsFanPage.

P.S I cannot stop walking past my wall to look at my tree!!! I love it!
